ARTIST IN RESIDENCE MEL SHAND

Mel Shand is a full time artist working from her studio in Aberdeenshire where she paints and draws large and small colourful oils and 'dirty big drawings' in charcoal and graphite spending as much time outdoors fighting midgies and making observations with a camera and sketchbook. Her subject matter features the indigenous birds and mammals to the Highlands of Scotland where she lives on a traditional sporting Estate with Hedge the gamekeeper. Mel finds her inspiration sometimes quite literally lying on the doorstep. In 2013 she published "A Portrait of the River Dee" about the fishing ghillies and folk whose life and work revolve around the river and cast a bronze of her favourite subject, the Hare. The Heckleburn collective came about with four fellow multi disciplined artists when she instigated "River of fish" a community educational and creative project to raise awareness of the Atlantic salmon. She has painted the label artwork for the Dee Dram; a limited edition scotch whiskey and an artisan beer called Thunder and Lightning.

In 2015 she was  artist in action at the Scone Game Fair at the invitation of the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and in 2016 she spent a month in the USA on a ranch in Colorado drawing and painting horses, cowboys and bison where she had an epiphany of the similarities between the traditional work practices of cowboys and gamekeepers. She is bringing the first eight paintings of the collection to TGLE and will be found drawing hares in Speaker's Corner. A collection of original work and prints can be found at www.melshand.com.
